The leadership at Oasis is comprised of men and women who love, care and pray for our church. If you have questions for any of our staff or ministry volunteers, feel free to reach out and email them [click on their photo] or call our church office at (203) 439-0150.
What movie or novel character do you most identify with?
-I have two completely different fictional characters, but both fit me quite well. The first is Scout Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee). Scout is always questioning, always exploring, but she is always mindful and respectful of authority. She, at her young age, already understands that the world is filled with shades of gray, that not everything is starkly black or white. Scout knows in her heart -- and mind -- what is right (and conversely, what is wrong), and seeks a way to make right happen. She does not let being a girl, with it's starchy defined gender roles, stop her.
-My second character is Holly Winter, the main character in Susan Conant's Dog Lover Mysteries series (20 books in all). Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts (close to Conant's home in Newton), Holly breeds and shows dogs (Golden Retrievers with her mother when she was younger, but now Alaskan Malamutes). I was "raised" with Great Danes -- my mother bred, raised and showed them -- and I showed Danes from the age of 9 to my early 20s. Conant's books accurately portray the dog show world (but with more murders and mysteries!). I had the pleasure of meeting her husband in Summer 1997 in front of the actual house in Cambridge where the fictional Holly lives, and in 1998, I met Conant and her dogs at their hoe in Newton.
If you ruled the world, what would you change on Day 1?
-That there would always be peace on earth, and that there would be lots of flowers everywhere (and no one would suffer from allergies).
What are two things on your Bucket List?
-To fly to Russia, explore Moscow and St Petersburg, then take rail/drive across Europe, cross to Great Britain, exploring all along the way and taking my time to do it. Then I would make a trans-Atlantic ocean crossing home.
-To go on a ham radio DXpedition to legitimately activate P5 (North Korea).
What is your favorite Bible Verse?
-Luke 2:14 -- Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
-Philippians 4:4-7 -- Rejoice in the Lord always, and again, I say rejoice. Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
-Psalm 40 (any U2 fans out there?)
-Don't get me started on Psalm 137!
What is the last book that your read that you found difficult to put down?
-Lamb, the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, by Christopher Moore. The book is a satirical reconstruction of the time between Jesus' birth and the handful of years of his public ministry, as told by his best friend. It shows the Christ as a child, then a teenager, and then a man; he knows he is the Messiah, but also human, just as we are. The portrayal of Jesus (called Joshua in the book) is sympathetic, and while unconventional, is not totally irreverent.
What makes you stop and go "Wow!"?
-Bad WOW: Human stupidity
-Good WOW: The glory of God's creation and His love for us.
What are you passionate about?
-The power of words: Their ability to teach us, their ability to inspire us, their ability to change us, and yes, their ability to hurt us. The written word is a powerful tool and can never be completely erased.
What was your first job?
-Summer 1980, Big D Donut Shoppe in Dallas, Texas. It was 6-9 AM, Monday-Friday, all for the princely sum of $3.35/hour. Not bad for 13 years old! Oh, and babysitting the neighborhood children.
What was your first impression about Oasis?
-Friendly, inspiring, fun, and all combined with a clear love and reverence for our Lord. Anyone <<coughcoughDenniscoughcough>> with whom I can bond over Arlo Guthrie and obscure movie quotes is always good in my book!
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
-I am a 100% disabled veteran of the United States Coast Guard (Semper Paratus!).
-That the New England Patriots' "Spygate" incident all happened because of me. And yes, I'm a Pats fan!
